Kiwix is free. So is the app.

You can build this shelf yourself from public sources and pay nothing. What you pay for is having it built, checked and kept current for you.

Open source

The app and its engine are GPL-3.0. Use them with your own content, free.

Paid shelf

A subscription buys a checked, signed library, refreshed every month.

Never locks

Stop paying and updates stop. Everything you downloaded keeps working and exports.

The library

What is on the shelf

Reference books through Kiwix, public-domain manuals indexed page by page, and whatever you add. Every book shows the date of its snapshot.

Books
Wikipedia in three sizes: the top 50,000 articles, every article as text (about 49 GB), or everything with pictures (about 119 GB). WikiMed, WikEM, MDWiki, US military medicine manuals, Appropedia, Ready.gov, water treatment, food storage, knots, the CIA World Factbook, Project Gutenberg on medicine and agriculture, and Stack Exchange archives for sustainable living, outdoors, gardening, DIY and ham radio.
Manuals
FEMA Are You Ready?, FM 21-76 Survival, FM 4-25.11 First Aid, ATP 3-50.21 Survival, FM 21-10 Field Hygiene, the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning and CDC water guidance. Fetched for you, searchable by page.
Yours
Drop in PDFs and EPUBs, or a whole folder. Duplicates are skipped and subjects assigned. Save web pages as single files. Keep YouTube channels or playlists with their subtitles.
Maps
The whole world, offline. Street detail for the area on screen in one click, or the full planet at street level, about 130 GB.

The assistant

Cited, or declined.

It answers only from the library, with numbered citations. Each citation is a card with the document, the page and the exact excerpt. Click it and the page opens.

Every number is a page

Medical, electrical and structural answers end with a reminder to read the source itself.

Download

Get the app.

The whole app is free. Open it, add your own books and videos, or buy a plan and the shelf fills itself.

  • macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon
  • Free tier, no account
The first time you open it

This first build is not yet notarised by Apple, so macOS refuses it the first time. Once:

  1. Open OfflineVault from Applications. macOS says it could not verify the app. Click Done.
  2. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll to Security and click Open Anyway, then Open. After that it opens like any other app. On macOS 14, Control-click the app and choose Open instead.

Late beta.

Leave an email and the plan you have in mind. One message when there is real news, nothing else.

Questions

Asked before you ask.

Kiwix is free. Why pay?

You can assemble the library yourself. Kiwix, llama.cpp and the manuals are all public, and the app is free and open for exactly that. The subscription is the checked, signed shelf, kept current every month, so you do not have to.

What happens when I stop paying?

Updates stop. Everything you downloaded keeps working, with no time limit, and you can export all of it.

Does it really work with no internet?

Yes. After the first download every part runs on your Mac. The readiness drill exists so you can prove it yourself with Wi-Fi off.

Can I trust it with medical questions?

Treat it as a librarian, not a doctor. It answers only from sources you can open, cites the page, flags medical topics and refuses where a guess is dangerous. Then read the page.

How do I activate?

Pay with the button on a plan. The page after payment shows your licence key and an Open in OfflineVault button. Click it, or paste the key into Settings, Licence, Activate on each Mac. Core covers 2 Macs, Household and Founder 6.

I lost my key

Enter the email you paid with at /recover. If that fails, reply to your Stripe receipt and we will send it again.

What Mac do I need?

Apple Silicon, macOS 14 or later. 8 GB of memory runs the 4B model, 16 GB the 8B, 32 GB the 30B. The complete library wants an external SSD. Unplug the drive and the app waits for it.

macOS says it could not verify the app

This first build is not yet notarised by Apple. Open the app once and click Done, then go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll to Security and click Open Anyway. On macOS 14, Control-click the app in Applications and choose Open. You do this once. A notarised build replaces it when Apple finishes checking, and the app updates itself.
